A recent survey from Enterprise Management Associates identified user phone calls, also known as Screaming Customer Management Protocol (SCMP), as the most common way — by a large margin — that IT learns about application problems.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

Recent developments in DevOps practices as well as cloud technologies enable and encourage building monitoring and metric gathering from the ground floor. Just like pair programming, TDD, and agile methodologies help produce better software, DevOps practices such as monitoring and metrics enable better applications.
